The American Windmill Museum in Lubbock, Texas has been around since 1965, hosting a variety of events and educational programming. Schutte and his wife, Mary, left their home in northeast Texas in 1910 and traveled west, visiting various states and provinces in search of windmills that he believed could be adapted for use in Lubbock. They eventually found 15 windmills that Schutte believed could do the job. The windmills were shipped by rail to Lubbock, and Schutte began raising money to build the museum. (In addition, Schutte sought donations of windmills from all over the country, which are still on display in the museum today.) Schutte passed away in 1953, but his family carried on with the project. Today, the windmill museum is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places.
